Which Texas county fair wears the ‘largest’ crown?

Fort Bend and Brazoria Counties both have claimed it

The Bulletin

I have been covering county fair stories in Brazoria County since 1982. Throughout all these years, one question has consistently surfaced: Is the Brazoria County Fair truly the largest in Texas?

I wrote a few pieces on this topic during my time at The Houston Chronicle. While those physical clips are tucked away in a closet somewhere, the core of the debate remains relevant.

Those Chronicle articles were engaging to write, but the friendly rivalry between Fort Bend County and Brazoria County over which holds the title of Texas’ largest county fair is an ongoing saga.

Brazoria County has long claimed the title of hosting the largest county fair in the state. Fort Bend County, on the other hand, has contested that claim for just as long.

While the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo easily surpasses both in size and attendance, it represents the entire region rather than a single county fair.

That leaves us with Brazoria and Fort Bend counties. To be transparent, I have a natural bias toward Brazoria County, as the fair takes place in my hometown of Angleton. However, the case for Brazoria County extends well beyond local pride.

The Texas Governor’s Texas Music Office identifies the Brazoria County Fair as “the largest county fair in Texas.” (Texas.gov)

The Texas State Historical Association also describes the Brazoria County Fair as “the largest county fair in the state.”

The City of Angleton calls it the largest county fair in Texas and has reported attendance of about 250,000 people at the nine-day fair. A current 2026 FestivalNet listing gives the Brazoria County Fair a somewhat more conservative figure of 225,000.

Fort Bend County Fair officials have been quoted in The Houston Chronicle, saying that their fair was the largest county fair in Texas.

Here lies the key distinction: Fort Bend officials noted that their attendance has approached 200,000 in peak years. Even using conservative estimates of 200,000 to 250,000 annual attendees, Brazoria County consistently exceeds Fort Bend County’s highest- attendance figures.

In 2024, the Fort Bend County Fair drew 100,000 visitors. In 2025, it drew about the same.

Which fair is physically larger?

The Fort Bend County Fairgrounds encompass 70 acres on Hwy. 36. The Brazoria County Fair encompasses 120 acres.

Welcome to the Brazoria County Fair, the largest county fair in Texas.
